Kathleen’s First Job

The day after I turned 16, I began working in the drapery department of a department store which led to becoming one of their interior decorators. That position provided the opportunity to meet with people in their homes to design custom window treatments, upholstery, bedding and floor coverings. Although I knew I did not want to spend my life in retail, this job provided the opportunity to learn how to deal with people, survive in a commission environment and was a good starting point to combine my design skills and interest in business development and sales.

Her favorite way to relax

Sitting on my screen porch with music and a glass of wine, candles lit if it’s dark. On my own, with friends or family; it’s being on the porch that’s wonderfully relaxing!

Unexpected events

First was meeting my husband on a blind date and seven months later being married and living across the country. Second was the unplanned adoption of our daughter who we literally met and brought home from the hospital in a day, followed by the birth of her sister almost seven months later. The greatest joys in life can be completely unexpected and spontaneous!

I greatly enjoy reading anything by David McCullough. It was a thrilling moment to meet Mr. McCullough at the 2013 LeadingAge Pennsylvania Annual Meeting, receiving his autograph and having my picture taken with him!
